 About Us

THERE is nothing more refreshing and thirst-quenching than a mug of chilled beer. At the Church Street Cafe in Church Street, Penang, you can go further and get a mug of ice-cold Snow Beer. Manager Alice Chuah said it was the only place in town serving beer this novel way. Everything must be handled just right. First, the bottles of beer are chilled to the optimum temperature – too cold and there is a risk of the bottles shattering as the contents “explode”. If it’s not cold enough, the beer doesn’t “ice up” like it should. At this little pub-cum-eatery, there is a special refrigerator to keep the beer at a constant cold temperature. The mugs must also be chilled until they frost up as soon as they are brought out and make contact with humid, warm air. After that, it requires a steady hand from the experienced bar staff to pour the beer carefully into the glass, which whitens immediately into an almost solid body of foam which in turn slowly transforms into amber liquid – a process that takes two to three minutes. This is the famous Snow Beer which is very popular with the customers.

It’s also good for women as the drink is diluted to some extent by the ice,” said Chuah.
We are not just well known for serving beer this special way,” she said. “Our beer is also one of the most reasonably priced in town.

You can opt to have a Snow Beer made from Tiger, Heineken or Anchor priced from RM7.50 to RM9 nett. Draft Guinness is also served.
Our Signature Snow Beer This place is not really so much a cafe as an old-fashioned pub where you can pop in to have some refreshments and get away from the hustle and bustle of hot and dusty George Town. Inside, it is dark and cool. There is a lazy, comfortable feel about the place. Old favourites play in the background and get your foot tapping, but not so loudly that you can’t hold a conversation without shouting, like in some drinking holes.

It’s a place you can relax in, safe in the knowledge that you don’t have to be Trendy Joe or Kool Kat. There is a pool table at the front where you can have an unhurried game over a Snow Beer with a mate. The darts corner is located at the far end, complete with chalkboard, perfect for a round or two to see who’s going to shout for the next round of drinks.

It holds occasional competitions there, mainly sponsored by the beer company

There is food served from a small Western menu. It also offers “Osama Fried Rice” with a couple of skewers of satay and a fried egg, served with a bit of that indispensable local condiment, spicy sambal belacan. Among other dishes available are Fish and Chips and Spaghetti Alio Olio. It also serves surprisingly spicy (Chicken) Sausage with Onions while the Boneless Chicken is the clear favourite, its crunchiness going well with the black pepper sauce. On Wednesday and Saturday evenings, there is a “jamming session” on the stage at the back, and anyone who cares to can take part, bringing his own guitar or using what’s available there.

Church Street Cafe is open from noon to 1am (2am on Fridays and Saturdays). It is closed on Sundays.
